From the Artists:
'Ascension' investigates the intersection of technology and the natural environment in defining identity, hierarchy, and worship. Combining synthetic manufactured materials and natural mineral elements, the work examines the paradigm of the individual in a time where worship is directed away from nature and into the technological unknown.
We are both interested in how the intersection of technology and the natural environment influence identity, and in turn how this defines 'self'. Our initial conversation centred around ideas of hierarchy, totemism and worship, so our intent became to explore this through the use of both natural and manufactured materials.
Jay's work brings together natural and manufactured elements including acrylic forms, light installations and slate to investigate the intersection of the digital and the physical, and Rick utilises gold leaf in the Verre Eglomise technique to create reflective works examining constructed identity in a modern landscape. These materials felt like a natural fit given our mutual intent.
Mutual Intent has been an opportunity to connect on shared interests, and present new horizons on collaborative opportunities. The work asks viewers to consider the paradigm of the individual, and what it means to exist in a time where worship is directed away from nature and into the technological unknown.
